From the incredible team that built the Banshee Wines label comes Marine Layer. The name pays homage to the thick blanket of fog that pours in from the Pacific Ocean most summer mornings through the Petaluma Gap in the Sonoma Coast. The story of Marine Layer begins with their intimate knowledge of the best vineyard sites for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in California. Organic farming, heritage clones, hand-harvesting, and an obsession for quality guide their path. Every bottling of Marine Layer is produced in tiny quantities, some as small as four barrels. They use native yeast in their winemaking, minimal intervention, barrel-fermentation for their whites, and extended barrel aging for their reds. They’ve spared no expense to make wines that will compete with the very best Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs in the world.
Camp Meeting Ridge Chardonnay 2014 $59.99
Sourced entirely from their organically farmed Camp Meeting Ridge Vineyard. Planted in 1991, these “older” vines are producing their most exciting and interesting Chardonnays to date. Given the extremes of this site, each small block ripens at its own pace. Picked by hand in the foggy frigidness of the early morning, fruit integrity and temperature were ensured for a whole cluster pressing by sunrise. A combination of Hyde-Old Wente and Dijon 95 clones are planted throughout the vineyard.
Seaview Ridge Pinot Noir 2016 $74.99
Sourced entirely from their organic and biodynamically farmed Sea View Ridge Vineyard. Given the extremes of this site, including elevations of 1,400 to 1,875 feet, each small block ripens at its own pace. The soils on the ridge tops are shallow and rocky with a mix of volcanic soils in the lower blocks and broken sandstone and shale higher up, which naturally restrains yields. Planted in 1998, these older vines produce fruit with layers of complexity and wines with exceptional natural acidity. Clonal selections of 2A, Swan, Calera, and 777 formed the primary source for the final blend.
Camp Meeting Ridge Pinot Noir 2015 $78.99
Sourced entirely from their organically farmed Camp Meeting Ridge Estate Vineyard. Given the extremes of this site, including elevations of 1,150 to 1,400 feet, each small block ripens at its own pace. Close proximity to the cool Pacific Ocean and well-drained soils allow the estate to produce Pinot Noir with exceptional complexity, depth, minerality and natural acidity. Clonal selections of Swan, Dijon 115 and 777, and Calera were selected for the final blend.
