For those in search of purity, there is nothing like the Saar. It is arguably one of the earth's greatest, most unique wine-growing regions. This is where Peter Lauer farms some of the most exceptional slopes of Riesling.

Winemaker Peter Lauer represents the 5th generation to farm their wine estate located in the Saar, a sub-region in Mosel. The Saar tends to highlight a more elegant expression of the Riesling grape delivering a precise and mineral-driven wine. With a passion for Riesling, they cultivate some of the most coveted vineyard sites in the region.

Within the walls of his winery, each barrel corresponds to a distinctive style of wine and a special point of origin. The must, which is the freshly crushed juice including skins, stems, and seeds from specific vineyards, is always vinified in the same container as the previous year. The cask is thereby unique, creating a one-of-a-kind environment for the wine to flourish. The wild yeast flora inside the cask “hibernates” in the fine fibers of the wood and ferments the same site again in a style comparable to its predecessors. According to his grandfather’s custom, all wines are given this number – the house number in the old vaulted cellar which is displayed on the labels.

Peter Lauer pushes the boundaries of tradition in the region favoring a dryer style compared to his neighbors who produce a more namesake Mosel that demonstrates slightly higher sugar and body. Lauer delivers a wine that is fresh and has the most elegant minerality. Because of his natural approach in the vineyard coupled with a distinctive expression of terroir under each cork, these wines have become sought after.
