A top site in Marsannay, Sylvain works with sections of the Clos du Roy vineyard planted across several decades, the oldest from 1952, and youngest from 2006. Soils are a gravelly, calcium-rich 'grèzes litée' on a limestone bedrock, but transition to an iron-rich sandy marl towards the bottom of the slope. Pataille does 100% whole-cluster with this wine, and ages for 18 months in barrels, with about 6 months of harmonization in stainless after he blends the barrels. An impressive wine, and an argument for Crus in Marsannay!
