Philip Togni got his start in the wine industry with the illustrious Bordeaux estate Chateau Lascombes after earning his winemaking degree from the University of Bordeaux. There, he studied under the famed enologist Émile Peynaud who is said to be the godfather of modern winemaking-- Peynaud served to modernize Bordeaux and improve standards of winemaking worldwide.
Philip, alongside his wife Birgitta, moved to Napa to practice his learnings. He worked at Mayacamas, Inglebook, Cuvaison, and Chappellet before endeavoring to form his own project. It was at Chappellet that he became a permanent fixture of Napa Valley with is 1969 vintage Cabernet Sauvignon. By 1975, Birgitta and Philip had saved enough to start their own project, and to the surprise of many, decided to plant on the eastern slopes of the Mayacamas Range, Spring Mountain. They began planting their Spring Mountain Vineyard in 1981 and released their first wines beginning with the 1983 vintage. The cooler climate and higher elevation provided a longer growing season and slowed ripening-- ideal for rivaling the Bordeauxs of his yesteryear.
Lisa, Birgitta and Philip's daughter, has led the charge since 2000 after working throughout Australia, Bordeaux, and Burgundy. The style has remains ever steady, with wines of elegance, structure and refinement. Their wine portfolio has expanded only slightly as they are still focused on high-quality Bordeaux-style wines-- now making their benchmark Spring Mountain, Tanbark Hill and a late-harvest red inspired by Vin de Constance. Philip continues to work in the viineyards and cellars with over 70 vintages under his belt.
